Reconsidering Your Choices?

If you want to come to Swansea but are already holding a place at another university, you can self-release into Clearing by declining the place that you currently hold.

Follow our step-by-step guide below and start your bright future at Swansea University this September.

Declining your place in UCAS

UCAS has made it easier for you to change universities after you know your results. Instead of contacting your chosen university or college and waiting to be released into Clearing, you can do this yourself from your UCAS Hub.

  1. LOG IN: Log in to your UCAS Hub

  2. SELECT DECLINE: Click the link to "Decline My Place" on your homepage - you will be taken to a page explaining the process and asked to confirm if you are sure that you want to self-release.

  3. REFER YOURSELF: That’s it! When this has been completed, your status on UCAS will show that you are in Clearing. You will then need to refer yourself, via UCAS Hub, to the course you’ve been offered at Swansea during Clearing. Remember, even if you join us through Clearing, you can still apply for campus accommodation.

By declining your place, you are deciding that your current choices aren’t right for you, and that you’d prefer to use the Clearing process instead.

This process is known as ‘self-releasing’ and enables you to take advantage of the opportunities that are available during Clearing.

You need to be absolutely certain that you want to enter Clearing. Declining your place cancels the existing contract you have with your firm choice, will remove your insurance choice too, and also cancels any accommodation, scholarships or bursaries that you may have been offered. However, these may all still be available at your new choice (and more!), so it’s worth doing your research first.

If you have a place confirmed at a university, but want to change which university you’d like to study at, then you are able to decline your place in the UCAS Hub, and enter Clearing.

You can’t undo this decision on the Hub, so it’s worth thinking carefully about your choice.

The ‘Decline My Place’ option will become available to you in your UCAS Hub after 2nd July 2026.

Go to the ‘Your Choices’ section of the Hub, click ‘Add a Clearing Choice’, and enter the details of your new course choice. You should confirm this with your new university first, who can then process your details and confirm your place.

If this is the path you want to take, then you should not use the ‘Decline My Place’ option.

Rejecting your firm choice will automatically enter you into Clearing and will reject all existing offers. If you want to choose your insurance choice, you should speak to them instead of declining your place, to make sure they can still honour your place.

This can be a tough choice, and one that only you can make. Declining your place can be the right choice for you if you:

  • Have changed your mind about your current course or university
  • Are having second thoughts about your firm choice
  • Have seen another course you’re more interested in
  • Want to be closer to home, or perhaps further away if you’re ready for a change.
