Swansea University has awarded an honorary degree to Professor Dame Carol Robinson.
Professor Robinson was presented with the award today (28 July) during the degree ceremony for the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
Professor Dame Carol Robinson is the inaugural Director of the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discovery at the University of Oxford and also holds the University Chair of Dr Lee’s Professor of Chemistry. She is renowned for pioneering the use of mass spectrometry as an analytical tool and for her ground-breaking research into the 3D structure of proteins.
She completed her undergraduate education whilst working full-time at the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and subsequently studied for a MSc at the University of Swansea, before undertaking her PhD at the University of Cambridge.
A former President of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Royal Society Research Professor, she was the first female Professor of Chemistry at both the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. Her work has attracted numerous awards and prizes, including the distinction of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her services to Science and Industry.
On receiving her honorary award, Professor Robinson said: “I am very honoured to receive this award from Swansea University, which to my mind has always been a forward-looking University with a strong focus on the scientific. I will always remember the support I received while studying for my MSc here. Many thanks indeed.”
