Health Innovation

As we continuing to live longer, the preservation of good health and quality of life presents significant challenges to an increasingly ageing population. Health systems in the UK, and globally, are under enormous pressure. This requires innovative multi-disciplinary approaches across a range of platforms.

  • Our research at the Centre for NanoHealth (CNH) aims to develop innovative solutions to the world’s challenge of detecting the onset of diseases at the earliest stage. In designing, developing, manufacturing, testing and evaluating  novel devices, processes and sensors for point of care, near–patient and in vivo application, CNH’s research efforts are enhanced through creative collaborations with leading research institutes and consortia around the world.
  • Our work within A-STEM Sports and Exercise Science is exploring how exercise effects everyday health issues, such as Type 1 Diabetes, and the effects of nutrition on athletic performance. We are also working to improve prosthetics by analysing users’ gait and movements. The ASTUTE 2020 project at Swansea University in collaboration with Calon Cardio-Technology Ltd have developed a heart pump which can be used to help those with chronic heart failure.
  • Swansea University’s Centre for Innovative Ageing has achieved international recognition for its work in social and environmental gerontology.  The Centre aims to increase wellbeing and quality of life through research that includes perceptions of ageing, age diversity in the workplace, and attitudes towards technology.
  • Our Medical School is ranked first in the UK for research environment and second for overall research quality.
  • We are also focusing on developing novel procedures to simplify diagnosis and improve patient care. These include microneedle devices for specialised “pain-free” drug and vaccine delivery, and research which, in the future could lead to a £30 blood test to diagnose oesophageal cancer.
