Student Sport Manager Creates Welsh Hockey History

Sadie Mellalieu, Swansea University’s very own Student Sport Manager and Masters Hockey player made history this month, by winning the first World Cup medal to be won by any Welsh hockey team, male or female.

The 0ver 35s & 0ver 40s Masters Hockey World Cup took place at the Nottingham Hockey Centre between 12th and 21st August 2022.

Men’s and women’s teams from all over the world took part in the 10-day hockey extravaganza. Sadie and the Wales team took part in the women’s over 35s competition, which got off to a nail-biting start, with an agonisingly close 3-1 loss to eventual winners England. They then swept aside India, France, Scotland and Argentina on their way to the bronze medal match; where they beat the Netherlands 1-0 to claim the historic bronze medal.

Sadie, who has been managing Student Sport at the University for nearly ten years and is passionate about HE club sport was delighted with her medal place. She said:

“Competing for Wales at the Masters Hockey World Cup event has been an incredible experience for me; one I will never forget.

“I’ve loved every minute of playing hockey with my teammates. We want to raise the bar even higher now, with our next focus being the European Championships due to be held in Southgate, London next year.

“We’re very confident we can bring home another medal and create even more Welsh hockey history in the process.”
