Sadie is off to the World Cup!
Swansea University’s Student Sport Manager, Sadie Mellalieu, is once again representing Wales on the world stage as she is off to compete in the World Hockey Masters 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa!
Sadie will be heading out to South Africa on the 8th of October where she will be competing in the W035 (Women’s Over 35) team, playing the position of 10, a forward. Sadie will be captain of the team, leading them through their fixtures throughout the tournament with her motivational talks and expert advice!
The competition will run from the 12th – 21st of October in South Africa, taking place in the Hartleyvale Stadium, Cape Town. The team have been training at the University of South Wales and the Sport Wales National Centre, with their final training session taking place on the water-based hockey pitches here at our very own sports facilities, Swansea Bay Sports Park.
Sadie and the team, who have been working extremely hard to ensure they perform their best throughout this tournament, are looking forward to this experience. She said:
“I am looking forward to being captain of the Welsh team for the first time. I hope to replicate some of the success from two years ago, where we placed bronze in the World Cup in Nottingham.
The team have been training hard in the lead up to this tour and we are all looking forward to putting the training to work as we take on some of the best teams in the world.”
This is not the first time Sadie has represented Wales this year. Sadie recently competed in the Four Nations in Cork, Ireland throughout June, where the team took on England, Ireland and Scotland to battle for the Four Nations cup, where the team placed 3rd. Expectations are high for the team following their 3rd place medal in the 2022 World Cup, taking the win against the Netherlands! You can read more about this incredible win here.
Sadie has been managing Student Sport here for almost 12 years and is passionate about all areas of sport at Swansea University, ensuring all student athletes have the opportunity to take part in sport. You can find out more about club sport here.
Congratulations on your selection for the team Sadie, and we wish you the best of luck out in South Africa as Team Captain!
