Rhian is a Co- Director of the Professional Legal Courses and a lead in the establishment of the Centre for Professional Legal Practice. As part of the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law, the Centre delivers all legal professional postgraduate courses with a focus as a centre of excellence on preparing students and graduates for the legal profession, including through the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE).

Experienced in teaching on the undergraduate programme, Rhian’s focus is on Postgraduate taught programmes on the professional legal courses. Rhian is Course Director for Professional Conduct and Regulation, Professional Practice and Legal Services, Course Skills and a Teacher on the Business Law and Practice Course. Rhian is also a Course Director for Commercial Dispute Resolution, an elective subject taught in Stage 2 of the LPC / LLM in Advanced Drafting. All roles provide Rhian with the opportunity of sharing experiences from practice as a Solicitor specialising in Commercial Dispute Resolution. As a non-practising solicitor Rhian taught extensively throughout England and Wales, both on in-house and public courses on the Professional Skills Course before joining the University.

LALM05 Professional Practice and Legal Services

The module will enable you to appreciate the different types of organisation that provide legal services and the funding arrangements available to clients to access those legal services. It also focuses in detail on how to apply the SRA Principles and Codes of Conduct 2019 and the Solicitors Accounts Rules 2019 to ethical and practical scenarios typical of those you would encounter in practice as a trainee solicitor. The importance of professional conduct and the high levels of integrity expected of solicitors is a key feature of the module, which will help you recognise potential conduct issues as they arise and apply the rules to ensure that you act appropriately. The module will also give you an understanding of the importance of adhering to the Solicitors Accounts Rules and enable you to apply the rules so that you are competent to be entrusted with client money and money belonging to third parties. You will also learn to apply the Financial Services regulatory framework which provides when and how solicitors can deal with investment products.

LAPM05 Commercial Dispute Resolution

There is no other practice area where a fundamental knowledge of the key principles of the other areas which you have studied all come into play. Be it contract law or company law, property law or business law, a general understanding of the fundamental principles of these other areas brings about a practice area which is interesting and varied. The subject matter of the cases in which you will be involved will be as wide and as varied as the clients which you will find yourself representing. Each client¿s aims and objectives are very different. You will therefore need to be aware not only of litigation as a means of resolving your client¿s dispute but also of other alternative forms of dispute resolution which are increasingly playing a vital role in this area. In view of the broad nature of the module, rather than provide an in depth analysis, the course will provide a general oversight of this area of practice such that you will develop your awareness of the variety of issues which may arise.
