About
Val teaches Criminal Law and Human Rights Law. She has a particular interest in policing and protest law, and her research has centred on the extent to which state surveillance impedes or constrains protest rights. Her doctoral thesis considered the legal basis for ‘overt’ forms of state surveillance and monitoring, and questioned whether police powers in this area are adequately defined and constrained. It also examined different ways in which the process of mobilising for protests can be disrupted or ‘chilled’ by police surveillance practices.
Before coming to Swansea, Val was at the University of East Anglia.
