Why Mental Health Nursing at Swansea University?

During your university‑based learning, you will study at our beautiful Singleton Park Campus, set in green parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula. It’s an inspiring location to learn and an excellent environment to begin your nursing career.

Swansea has an outstanding reputation for nursing:

  • Top 200 in the World for Nursing (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025)
  • 96% of Nursing (Mental Health) graduates are in employment and/or study, or doing other activities such as travelling 15 months after leaving Swansea University (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2025)

You will be taught by qualified nurses, doctors and allied health professionals, many of whom continue to work in clinical practice. Their mix of academic expertise and real‑world experience creates a rich and supportive learning environment, helping you become a confident and capable nurse.

We have strong links with Welsh health boards and a wide network of health and social care partners. This means you will have access to high‑quality clinical placements in both urban and rural settings, gaining varied and meaningful practice experience throughout your training.

If you can commit to working in Wales for 18 months after graduating, you could get your tuition fees covered in full through the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership.

This MSc is also unique: it is the only pre‑registration MSc Nursing programme in Wales delivered over two years, enabling graduates from any discipline to begin a career in nursing and prepare to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Your Mental Health Nursing experience

Our MSc Nursing programme is designed to help you become a safe, effective and compassionate nurse, fully prepared for the realities of modern, multidisciplinary health care. You will study in an environment that supports your growth, builds your confidence and helps you develop the skills needed to care for patients across a wide range of settings.

You will have access to outstanding facilities, including realistic clinical suites where you can practise essential skills and apply your theoretical knowledge in situations that closely mirror real hospital and community environments. Simulation is embedded throughout to help you rehearse decision‑making, work in teams and receive supportive feedback before stepping into practice.

You will also learn at Swansea’s Simulation and Immersive Learning Centre (SUSIM), which delivers a variety of scenario‑based and skills‑focused activities across sites. Selected virtual reality simulation resources are already available in Welsh, with additional Welsh‑medium scenarios in development.

Alongside high‑fidelity and scenario‑based simulation, you will work with our Virtual Family, a multi‑generational case resource used across the programme. By following family members over time, you will explore assessment, long‑term condition management, medicines optimisation, safeguarding and shared decision‑making, and see how nursing decisions shape people’s journeys across the continuum of care. Some Virtual Family resources are also available in Welsh.

Practice learning is a major part of your training. Across the programme, you will complete 40 weeks on placement in a diverse range of settings, including hospitals, community teams, nursing homes and independent or voluntary sector services. You will be supported by practice supervisors, practice assessors and academic assessors who work together to guide your progress and help you meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council proficiencies.

Interprofessional learning is built in, giving you opportunities to learn with and from students across health and social care disciplines, ideal preparation for the realities of multidisciplinary teamwork.

If you wish, you can also study elements of your Master’s through the medium of Welsh. You will have access to bilingual resources, Welsh‑speaking personal tutors and assessors, and you may be eligible for scholarships or financial support through the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

Mental Health Nursing career opportunities

After graduating, you will be eligible to apply for Registered Nurse (Mental Health) status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and to register as a nurse for work in the EU and EEA.

UK students will also be able to access NHS funding to meet the cost of training. Those who receive the bursary will need to commit to remaining in employment in Wales in the public/private/independent health and social care sectors for up to two years following registration with the NMC.

The NHS Wales Shared Service Partnership (NWSSP), in agreement with NHS Wales health boards and universities across Wales, has developed and manages a matching process under the Student Streamlining Scheme. At the end of your programme, you will be able to apply for vacancies across Wales through the scheme.
