Course Overview

Our MSc in Social Research Methods provides you with advanced training, in both qualitative and quantitative approaches, that are widely used across the social sciences.

You will be trained together with ESRC/WGSSS doctoral students on a quality research methods enhancement scheme, where you will gain a strong grounding in research ethics and governance, while developing the practical skills to design, conduct and critically evaluate research.

The programme will equip you with the ability to work confidently with a range of tools and techniques, including specialist databases, statistical software and digital research programmes, preparing you to apply these skills across diverse social science contexts.

This MSc is underpinned by a philosophy that combines critical engagement with theory and hands-on practice, enabling you to become a reflective, skilled and independent researcher. As such, it provides an excellent basis to go on and pursue a PhD.

Housed within the School of Social Sciences at Swansea University, this programme brings together expertise from across the university, including the Department of Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy; the Department of Politics, Philosophy and International Relations; the Department of Education and Childhood Studies; the School of Management, and the Department of Health Data Science.

Your Social Research Methods experience

Across the programme, you will complete five compulsory modules, covering topics such as advanced research skills, data collection and analysis, and qualitative and quantitative research methods.

In addition to this, you can choose one optional module from a wide interdisciplinary selection across the university, with topics covering areas such as applied criminology, countering violent extremism, health data modelling, and critical security studies. This flexibility allows you to tailor the programme to your own research interests and career aspirations.

The programme structure reflects a progressive learning journey:

  • Initial modules will introduce you to philosophical underpinnings, critical approaches, and practical skills related to researching and understanding society
  • You will then move on to study topics that extend these foundations through training in quantitative and qualitative research methods. You will be exposed to real-world case studies and hands-on practice, further developing your skills and knowledge
  • Choosing from a range of optional modules will then enable you to tailor your learning around your disciplinary interests and career goals. This is where the programme has an advantage, as you can draw on specialised modules from across numerous disciplines, widening your knowledge base
  • The programme concludes with a dissertation that integrates theory and practice, requiring you to execute an independent piece of empirical research, while being closely supported by your academic supervisor
