Speaker of Perak State Assembly
Your Career
I am a politician. Currently, I’m the Speaker for the Perak State Assembly (a state in Malaysia). This is my second time serving as the Speaker since 2020. I used to be a State Assemblyman from 2008 till 2018. I was also an Exco Member (State Minister) from 2009 to 2018. I used to hold various portfolios such as Education, Investment, and Industry. Before joining politics, I used to be an Assistant Director with the Ministry of International Trade & Industry of Malaysia and worked at the University Technology of PETRONAS.
I spent 3 memorable years in Swansea studying for my undergraduate study. I enjoyed the experience of living, making friends, learning to be independent, and meeting colleagues from all over the world. I love the environment at Swansea.
What are your top 3 favourite things about Swansea?
- the people of Swansea are friendly. I lived in the UK for 7 years doing my A Levels and my post-graduate studies elsewhere, nothing compared to the feeling of “being welcome” living in Swansea
- the Swansea bay. Having a campus fronting the sea is therapeutic. I enjoyed walking along the beach during all seasons just to release the stress and enjoying the fresh sea breeze.
- I enjoyed the not-so-big Swansea city with all the necessary facilities and the sense of safety that it provides.
Why did you choose to study your degree at Swansea?
It was by default. In the summer of 1988, when the A level’s result was released there was a postal strike. So, there was basically chaos all over the UK because the offer and acceptance letters for all students were stuck and not delivered as scheduled. As expected, everyone started to use the fixed line phones to contact the anticipated jammed telephone lines. I only managed to get through to Swansea, and basically “Swansea chose me instead of the other way” and I’m glad!
Would you recommend Swansea University to someone thinking of going to University?
Yes! I sent my daughter to study for a Master’s degree in International Management at Swansea and my neighbour's son to study for his degree in Aerospace Engineering at Swansea. I trust the University and Swansea to provide them not only with good sound education but also a worthwhile experience.
How did your degree prepare you for your career?
The study, knowledge, experience, and exchanging of views with the lecturers and colleagues moulded my thinking when I started working and of course when formulating policies for my state.
What advice would you give to students who want to pursue your career?
Have patience and perseverance and be truthful to yourself.
