Roderick Thomas has over 25 years experience in higher education. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng, since 1998) and elected Fellow of the IET in 2005 and currently sits on a number the IET committees including Regulation & Standards and Academic Accreditation.

He is a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, Johannesburg, South Africa. He is particularly interested in operations and asset management including condition monitoring and predictive failure and is a member of a research group investigating Value Based Healthcare (VBHC). He has supervised and examined a number of PhD students and is a member of the School of Management iLab Research Centre. He is also an International Expert Witness in Condition Monitoring and a STEM Ambassador.

He has a PhD in Integrated Condition Monitoring, a Master of Education and a Master of Philosophy in Operational Management. He has also served a 4-year technical apprenticeship with a large manufacturing company.

Previously Roderick was Conference Chairman and Organiser QRM (Quality Reliability and Maintenance) an International Biennial Condition Monitoring Conference hosted at St. Edmund Hall, University of Oxford and co-sponsored by the IMechE and the IET. The QRM Proceedings have been published since 1998 and have in excess of 300 papers including Asset Management, Operations Management, Condition Monitoring Management and Innovation Management.

He is author of a number of books including the Thermography Handbook published in Oxford. He has written over 40 journal papers and chapters in a number of reference textbooks. He is Technical Industrial Editor, Thermology International Journal, Guest Editor Quality Reliability Engineering International Journal published by Wiley. More recently, Roderick has co-authored journal articles in a number of journals including Creating Entrepreneurial Space: Talking through Multi voices, reflections on emerging debates (Emerald, 2019).

He is passionate about the pastoral and academic care of all his students.
