New scholarship to mark Hywel Teifi Edwards’ significant contribution to Welsh culture

Launching an appeal to establish a new scholarship

Swansea University’s Academi Hywel Teifi has launched an appeal to establish a new scholarship in memory of Hywel Teifi Edwards at the Eisteddfod in Llanrwst.

‌The Hywel Teifi Memorial Scholarship will aim to support Welsh-medium postgraduate students who wish to study a field related to Hywel Teifi's contribution to Welsh learning and culture, specifically:

  • History
  • Literature
  • The Welsh language
  • Politics
  • The media

In 2020, the University will celebrate its centenary, and it will be a decade since the Academi was established at Swansea University in memory of Hywel Teifi, where he spent 30 years as a lecturer.

Academi Hywel Teifi is asking people to contribute to the scholarship on a monthly basis, with the intention of rewarding the first holder at the National Eisteddfod in Ceredigion, Hywel Teifi Edwards' birthplace, in 2020.

‌Broadcaster Huw Edwards said: "I hope friends from Wales and beyond will be willing to contribute to this memorial scholarship that will not only keep my father's memory alive, but also secure support for Welsh-medium scholars and a continuation of the areas he spent his life studying and teaching.”

Dr Gwenno Ffrancon, Director of Academi Hywel Teifi, said: “The Academi has contributed greatly to Welsh-medium scholarship over the last decade and continually promotes the research and creative talents of our staff and students. Rewarding students with a scholarship like this will no doubt deepen the Academi's ability to support work and contributions for the future.”
